About

Cynthia White

I am a painter based in Boston. I currently paint mostly abstract paints. I have 90 paintings, as well as a number of etched prints and photographs, in private and corporate collections

Currently, I have a solo show at ShawSpring Partners on Newbury Street in Boston that kicked off in June 2019. (Safe and physically-distant viewings of the show or video viewings available by appointment.)

My work is available directly from me, through Perigold, through Saatchi Art, and by commission.

Artist Statement

“When I was 22 and starting my first real job, I looked around at the grown ups surrounding me that had successful careers in business. Many, if not most, had busy weekend hobbies like playing in a band, belly dancing, writing novels, or singing. I wondered why they were working so passionately at hobbies because I thought you were just supposed to choose one path and let go of the others.

After getting my undergraduate degree in studio art and anthropology from Holy Cross and then a masters in foreign policy from the Fletcher School at Tufts, I spend most of my time running Ceatro Group, a research and consulting firm I founded in 2010. And, like all those successful grown ups from my first job, I now spend the rest of my time happily making art on the side.

The art I make – subject, size, medium, surface, use – changes as my life changes.  When I left college and moved to West Africa, drawing on newspaper with pastels and working with fabric was the most practical. When I started living in tiny city apartments without the art studios of college, oil paints became prohibitively messy so I switched to watercolors.

For years I traveled full-time as a management consultant and photography was the most accessible medium.  Now, I’ve been painting again for a few years and love painting in the abstract.

Regardless of which medium or style I am using, my love of color has not changed. It has been a consistent part of the art I create whether working with paints, fabrics, paper,  printmaking, bookmaking, or sculpture. My recent paintings are studies in color done with fluid mediums and using the differing viscosity of colors, mediums, and paint and ink types.

This innate unpredictability is amazingly freeing as an artist.”
